Disinfecting of drinking water is one of the major public health advances of the 20th century. What are DPB's and how are they formed!

NOM = Natural Organic Material - Leaves, debris, soil etc.
DPB = Disinfection by-product

As illustrated above, Time, Temperature and Ph are determining factors in the formation of DBP's. C12 (chlorine of some form) is added to the water to aid in the removal of microbial organisms from the drinking water. The problem is that the C12 reacts with NOM (natural organic material) to form DBP's (disinfecting byproducts). Then this problem is compounded by TIME in the storage tank. The longer the water stays in the tank (no circulation) it becomes thermally stratified. Thermal stratification is where the colder water begins to settle toward the bottom of the tank, and the warmer water rises. Depending upon how your tank is set up, some tanks get replenished in the bottom and then depleted from the bottom. This allows the upper warmer water to stay in the tank for extended periods of time. This warmer water accumulates unwanted DBP's.

Chemical, biological and mechanical oxidations are candidate technologies to control DBP formation. links between compound character, removal and DBP formation.

The Air-Max Oxygenator can help to eliminate this stratification, and release the DBP's back into the atmosphere. The Air-Max Oxygenator starts to immediately circulate the lower colder water to the top and break up the warmer water. Over time this creates an even temperature from top to bottom. During this time air bubbles ( oxygen) is being introduced into the water which starts to strip the water of the unwanted DBP's through AOP (advanced oxidation process). With most other AOP's there was an increase in HAA's, where the Air-Max Oxygenator aided in releasing some of the HAA's. Formation of disinfections by-products (DBP's) can be controlled by removal of disinfection by-product precursors before disinfection.

Installing the Air-Max Oxygenator

The pump motor assembly is easily attached to the float body with the supplied clamps and tubing. The flexible tubing is easily adjustable for the different depths of your tank or reservoir. The test unit was a 1/2 horsepower unit and operated on standard 120 volts at 60Hz. The pump and motor are stainless steel in construction and enclosed in a pvc induction sleeve that has a stainless steel intake screen. To meet NEC Electrical Codes, the unit needs to be installed with proper GFCI protection to avoid accidental shock.

Immediately after installation, the Air-Max began to produce highly aerated and oxygenated plumes of water (see below). These plumes were projecting outward in excess of 40 feet (20 feet in either direction).

What's Below the Waterline

The water is drawn into the unit at the lower depths of the reservoir and pumped toward the nozzle. As the water enters the nozzle oxygen is introduced into the opposing streams which helps oxidize the “disinfecting byproducts” known as DBP's. These "DBP's are listed as volatile bi products caused by the chemical reaction between chlorine and natural material such as soil, organic material, and water acids. One of the problem DBP’s formed is chloroform. Our AIR-MAX OXYGEN INJECTOR™ proved effective in helping to remove these toxic chemicals including chloroform for the reservoir. The unit removes the chloroform by virtue of volatilization. As the water is forced through our unit the injecting air, caused the chloroform to become entrained into the air bubbles so they could evaporate into the air as it breaks the surface of the water. The chloroform is simply released into the atmosphere. .

In tests conducted by the Monroe County Water Authority the Air Max proved to be effective at reducing THM's and Chloroform.

Upon startup on July 24th we were running around 51-52 ppb. Twelve days later on August 4th we were at 35 ppb

The unit was turned off and over the next twenty days the ppb's rose back up to 50 ppb.

The unit was turned back on and over the next THREE WEEKS lowered back to 32 ppb

We achieved a 36% reduction in THM's in three weeks.

Mr. Thomas Clark, of MCWA, said, "It allowed us to re-circulate water within our tank, continually stripping chloroform from the water vs. other systems that we tried where the water was treated in a single pass through mode. Where the water got some air, then proceeded on and did not receive any more air."

Basic Water Survival Tips

Humans can survive an average of three to five days without any water. Your altitude, room temperature and relative humidity also play a vital role in this determination. During the 2010 Haiti disaster they found people alive as long as fourteen (14) days. In colder or warmer temperatures, the need for water is greater. The need for water also increases with physical activity as your body loses liquids through perspiration.

A typical person will lose 60 to 100 ounces of water per day under ordinary conditions. One typically requires 120 to 200 ounces of water or other liquids every day to avoid dehydration and to keep the body functioning properly. Recent Studies have stated that you should drink a minimum of 1/2 of your body weight in ounces of water to remain properly hydrated.

Dehydration is the result of not taking in enough fluids. Dehydration leads to lethargy, headaches, dizziness, confusion, and eventually even death. Even mild dehydration reduces endurance and impairs concentration, which can be dangerous where clear thinking is essential.
